Western Connecticut Orienteering Club (WCOC)
Course Length and Difficulty
The names of the courses are color-coded to represent the level of navigation difficulty and length. Unless indicated in the notes for a particular event, most WCOC events will include the following courses:
White--easy navigation, control points on trails, 2-3 kilometers in length, most people can complete in 30-60 minutes
Yellow--advanced beginner navigation, control points on or near trails and linear features like stone walls or streams, 2.5-3.5 k, most people can complete in about an hour
Orange--intermediate navigation, control points may be in the woods but along linear feature or near a significant feature, 3-4.5 k, most people can complete in 1 to 2 hours
Brown--advanced navigation, control points can be anywhere on the map, 3-5 k, most people can complete in 1 to 1.5 hours
Green--advanced navigation, control points can be anywhere on the map, 4-7 k, most people can complete in 1 to 2 hours
Red--advanced navigation, control points can be anywhere on the map, 6-10 k, most people can complete in 1.5 to 2 hours
*Blue--advanced navigation, control points can be anywhere on the map, 8-14 k, most people can complete in 1.5 to 2 hours
*Many events do not include a Blue course.
